7 Important Tips to Becoming a Fantastic Voice Over Artist
Being a voice-over artist isn't easy. You can train for years and still keep learning new things.
Demand for voice actors is increasing if you can fit what companies are looking for in a actor.
So how do you get good enough to be considered for these parts? This post will show you a few tips to help you hone your craft.
Keep reading to learn seven tips that will help improve your skill.1. Warm up Before Practicing
If you've gone to the gym, then you know how important it is to warm up before exercising. The same thing applies when you practice your voice-over. You need to prepare your voice to get worked out.
Warming up both your body and voice is essential. If you have a tense body, it will be hard for you to get into the right frame of mind.
Stretching exercises are a great way to loosen up your body. Do some head rolls, shoulder rolls, and touch your toes. Anything simple like these stretches will work.
For your face, work on scrunching and stretching the muscles on your face. You can also work out your tongue by sticking it as far out of your mouth as possible. Then start to roll it in your mouth in different directions.
For your voice, practicing PTKT and BGDG sounds can help prep your voice for work.2. Learn the Character's Intention
Every character you play has a story and a desire. If you can't put yourself in the shoes of the person who's part you are playing, how can you express what they want?
Don't only memorize the script. Learn about the product you are promoting or the story that you are telling. Each character you do is unique and needs a flare unique to that character.
Sometimes this means going outside your comfort zone. You might have a way to perform that works for you, but sometimes a character can benefit from something unique. Try new styles to see if they fit better with a part.
You might just find characters in you that you never knew existed.3. Practice Vocal Tone and Inflection
Two of the problems new voice-over artists face is getting tone and inflection right.
Inflection is what happens when you change the tone of your voice to match the context of what you are saying. Nobody wants to listen to somebody with a neutral tone the entire time.
Inflection allows you to emphasize parts of your speech that matter and add variety.
Take the following for example:
The tree is big.
The tree is big?
The words are the same, but the implication is different. The first sentence is a statement about a tree. But the second sentence is asking a question.
How you speak can change the entire meaning of a sentence.
This great guide will show you other qualities for you to practice to step up your game.4. Don't Forget to Breathe
Audible breathing doing recordings have a history of being a no-go in voice-over work. While it isn't as big of a deal as it used to be, you should still try to minimize when you are practicing.
Practice taking shorter breathes during your speech, so you aren't gasping for air in the middle of a sentence. Before you start, read through your script again to find points where you can pause to take a breath.
When you take a breath, do everything you can to minimize the microphone picking it up. If you have a directional mic, this is easier since you can turn your head to change the direction of the sound.5. Stand up When Delivering
If you do all your work and practice sitting down, change things up and try a standing delivery.
Standing not only helps open up your breathing, but it also helps you speak more clearly and consistently. When you are sitting down, you are applying pressure on your breathing muscles. Removing this pressure is what allows you to breathe more deeply.
Have you also noticed that you are usually more animated when you are speaking while standing? When you express yourself with motion, you can immerse yourself more into the role.
You can also practice good posture easier when standing. When your posture is sloppy, it stops you from performing at your best. You can breathe easier and carry yourself far better.6. Get Good Equipment
Having proper gear isn't only needed when you are recording for a job. It also helps when you are practicing.
When you have proper gear your recordings are going to be higher quality and allow you to examine your work to find your weakness.
You need a good microphone to capture your entire voice. If you have distortion or aren't set up to block external noise, then you aren't going to get a good sound recording.
Good headphones will give you a crystal picture of what you sound like in a recording. Low-quality audio equipment doesn't always output what you recorded. With excellent sound, you can pick up on small things that you need to improve on.7. Try Not to Practice from a Script
For most people, it's obvious when someone is giving a speech from a script. How boring is that?
Before making your recordings and sending in your work, memorize your script and practice from memory. You will end up with a more original and entertaining clip.
Act like you are having a conversation with a friend. Some work may need a little something extra, but being natural can get you far on its own.Don't Stop Practicing Your Voice-Over Artist Skills
Like any profession, being a voice-over artist will take time and practice to become a pro. By following the above tips, you can take the first step in your career. The sooner you start, the sooner you can get your next gig.
